English Language Laboratory
(To help students not only learn grammatically correct English but help them use it in various situations)
Dear Parents,
Unfortunately I know the reading problem in most English medium schools as also their ability to speak in English. Most children are therefore labeled as reading failures and also failures in simple English conversation.
When the child comes to std. 1st. reading becomes nothing more than a difficult guessing game. The teacher shows the picture of a cat and then says the word Cat. The next day if the child is asked to read Cat it would read Cot for Cat, and then the teacher would correct. It is a negative experience
The problem is children look at the picture then pronounce the word. The sound of words especially in English is always confusing, and therefore in the long run hurts the ability to read.
This continues for a long time, for the story books or Look and Say readers are dull and boring. Children grow up without proper reading skills.
Obviously the lesson for us is that children come to school with rich listening and vocabulary. He only has to decode the new word and then he automatically knows the meaning.
But we must stop asking what is wrong with our children judging to the fact that they speak so very little English, and thus suffer the consequences for the rest of their lives.
I have therefore accepted that the new "Talk and Say" electronic programmes are much better and useful and therefore have decided to set up a new Language Laboratory in school. This will enable children from std. V to X1 to speak English like their mother tongue. It will also provide good communication skills in English that promise a competitive edge to students for a rewarding and lucrative career.
The Language Laboratory:
Our language lab will consist of 21 sets of 4 levels with a sitting capacity of 25 children to begin with.
There will be a time table within the usual time table to enable each child to spend 35 minutes independently in the lab per week. This will be part of the curriculum from new term as part of the education and not as an optional or extra curricular activity. The lab will be controlled and managed by a reputed qualified and experienced English Head. children who want to make use of this lab in the vacation may be allowed to do so.
As soon as the lab is ready we will invite parents to visit it and see for themselves how very powerful this system is and how much it will help our children. The lab will have volume controls, a button to control the speed of the tape and a pause button.
We are sure you'll appreciate our efforts for we'll be the first one to use this sort of teaching lab in a school in Ahmedabad city, and all this is for the wonderful co - operation from our P.T.A. and you parents.
Hoping to meet you all at the demonstration very soon.
Thanking You
Yours in the field of education
